Substance Use Treatment
At The Haven at College, we provide supportive and comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for young adults who are struggling with a substance use disorder.
We recognize that each client’s journey to recovery is unique, and our goal is to provide tailored care that promotes personal growth, resilience, and long-term recovery in a compassionate environment.
At the Haven, we recognize that substance use disorders can be difficult to diagnose and understand, especially among young adults where experimentation and use can be common on college campuses. However, our ten plus years of experience in working with college students struggling with substance use disorders has enabled us to create an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that provides clients with the best opportunity to learn, change and begin recovering with empathy and respect. Our goal is to help clients achieve long-term recovery and well-being as defined by the clients’ goals.
Program Overview
At The Haven, our substance use disorder IOP provides a comprehensive treatment program that includes weekly individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy sessions as needed.
Treatment planning at The Haven is a collaborative process that involves clients, their families, if applicable, and our multidisciplinary team. Prior to admission we conduct a multidimensional assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan to address each client’s unique needs and goals. Our assessments include multiple questions that address common issues faced by young adults, such as irregular sleep patterns, disordered eating, and the potential need for involving family in treatment, as well as a detailed examination of the client’s substance use patterns. Our approach is dynamic, allowing us to adjust treatment plans based on ongoing evaluations and client progress. Following an assessment, a client is either admitted into our IOP or if we determine that the client’s needs are best addressed by a higher level of treatment we will make our best efforts to refer the client to several alternative providers.
Our group therapy treatment for substance use clients focuses on topics such as understanding the neurobiology of addiction, analyzing family dynamics, developing distress tolerance, establishing and maintaining healthy relationships and relapse prevention.
Family Involvement
Family involvement is a cornerstone of The Haven’s treatment philosophy, as our experience demonstrates that family engagement in therapy can significantly enhance treatment outcomes for young adults. Involving family members in the treatment process provides a support system for the client and helps address family dynamics that may contribute to the client’s issues.
Evidence-Based Treatment
Our treatment approach incorporates evidence-based modalities and somatic interventions to create a holistic treatment program. Our professionals use the following therapeutic modalities to treat our clients:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Seeking Safety
- Stages of Change
- Psycho-educational groups
- Family Therapy
- Somatic Therapy
- Experiential Therapy
Medication Management
Our program seamlessly integrates psychiatry and medication management with therapy to provide comprehensive care and ensure that all aspects of a client’s mental health are addressed. At The Haven we collaborate with our client’s psychiatric provider consistently throughout treatment and make outside referrals for psychiatric care if the need exists.
Continual Refinement Through Measurement-Based Care
Furthermore, we employ Measurement-Based Care (MBC) as a cornerstone of our treatment approach. MBC involves the systematic use of standardized, evidence-based tools and assessments to track a client’s symptoms, progress, and treatment outcomes over time. By regularly collecting and analyzing data on key indicators of progress, such as quantity and frequency of substance use, existence of risk factors (existence of strong cravings or stressful events) and the presence of protective factors, such as social supports, we can make informed decisions about adjusting treatment plans. This data-driven approach ensures that our interventions are continuously tailored to meet the evolving needs of each client, leading to more effective and personalized care.
