Why Choose The Haven at College?
We Offer Clients A Community of Their Peers
The Haven at College provides tailored mental health and substance use treatment for young adults for whom college is a part of their plan. Most of our clients are ages 18-28 and are actively attending college full-time, some are attending part-time and some have fallen off their planned academic path, but intend to return once they are healthy and ready. We do not try to be a treatment center for all - we do not treat children, adolescents or more mature adults or clients with a higher level of need requiring hospitalization, residential treatment, detox, or withdrawal management services. As a result as a Haven client, you will be surrounded by other young adults with unique but similar struggles.
We offer groups focused on developing and maintaining healthy relationships with one's self, friends, and family, managing social anxiety, developing skills to succeed academically and building resilience. These groups are a place to practice openness and vulnerability where you can share your authentic self and recovery journey. Outside of group therapy we offer events and activities to expand your social circle and meet like minded people who support your recovery goals.
We Use a Personalized Approach to Treatment
With both our Clinical and Student Care Management teams, we offer a personalized approach to how we guide students through the treatment process. Each student is welcomed to the program with an initial one-on-one session with our Clinical Director, as well as an additional orientation with our Student Care Manager. Our Clinical Director maintains contact with each client with regular check ins to ensure that students feel supported and understood throughout their treatment journey. Our clinicians also collaborate with our clients' outside care team, if applicable, maintaining contact with other important clients in our caregivers lives.
Our Treatment Addresses Issues Specific to College Young Adults
Our narrow focus enables us to customize our treatment and programming to topics that are specifically relevant for a college age population. By focusing on topics like managing academic stress, building strong personal relationships, reducing social anxiety and improving digital well being, we are able to target the unique challenges that most of our clients are facing. This comprehensive approach ensures that students can successfully navigate their lives while receiving the care they need. We have found that integrating academic and social support into treatment can significantly improve recovery outcomes for college students.
Our Holistic Treatment Balances Evidence-Based Modalities with Experiential Interventions
Our treatment program utilizes both "top-down" and "bottom-up" approaches. The top-down approach is talk-based therapy which focuses on the cognitive parts of the brain, and works to heal using the parts of the brain associated with thinking, speaking, and current emotions. The bottom-up approach targets the areas of the brain that store traumatic or painful events, memories and emotions, and works to heal using the parts of the brain responsible for reflexes, memories, and survival responses.
The Haven’s top-down treatment approach includes incorporating evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Seeking Safety (SS). Additionally, we offer bottom-up approaches that include experiential and somatic interventions. These complementary approaches create a holistic program with a focus on mind-body interventions.
The Haven's program is structured to provide approximately 70% psychoeducation and skills development therapy groups, with the remaining 30% dedicated to process, experiential, and somatic therapy groups, We prioritize structured interventions that are designed to address the developmental and psychosocial needs of college students; we focus on building resilience, developing coping skills, and enhancing personal agency. This is done by identifying maladaptive behaviors and beliefs, along with their origination, and either reducing or eliminating those behaviors in the service of values-based living. Our goal is to provide our clients with the tools necessary to get back in the driver seat, and not allow unhelpful thoughts, emotions and urges tell them how to drive.
